HEQ report, 2025

Designer, CHIA Internship, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

From June to October 2025, I served as a design intern on the communications team at the Center for Health Information and Analysis of Massachusetts. I worked on a range of projects including the development of a new company color palette, improving presentation data graphics, and accessibility testing, but my long-term project was the Health Equity and Quality Report. With the immense support and feedback from the data and communications teams, I developed new data visualizations, icons, and a new layout for the final report.

The first phase of this project was dedicated to reimagining the existing chart styles. During the early weeks of my internship. I came up with 10+ new visualizations for the types of data CHIA uses and got feedback from members of the design team as well as the data analysis team. I also developed 15+ redesigns of the report template, also getting feedback from various team members.

After this phase, I was given full copy, numbers, and rough versions of the data visualizations that I would be changing. I redesigned the graphics and incorporated copy, and as new copy came in from different CHIA teams, I would continue to update the reports. Several times a week, I’d send over a PDF version to the different teams to get feedback at every step of the way. Feedback ranged from visual aesthetics, pointing out mismatched text styles, as well as wording and paragraph edits (some of which were not my responsibility to fix). It was a true challenge to balance the feedback of so many different people and perspectives, but my supervisor, Maria, helped me navigate any confusions or contradictions that came up.

Once we believed the report and visuals were in excellent condition, we submitted for approval from members of CHIA leadership. Few minor tweaks were made before the report was published!

Through this process, I gained hard skills in sticking to brand consistency and ensuring data clarity as well as soft skills in interpreting healthcare data and working in design team. This project took months but was officially published in September 2025!
